A soldier, a statesman, a Minnesotan—General John W. Vessey Jr. dedicated his life to service, leading with courage from the battlefields of WWII to the highest ranks of military leadership. His commitment to veterans, his advocacy for strong national defense, and his enduring impact on Minnesota’s military community continue to be a guiding force. Today, we remember his extraordinary legacy and the values he upheld throughout his remarkable career.

On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began—a conflict that reshaped nations and tested the resilience of those who served. Over three years of brutal combat, millions of lives were impacted, and the sacrifices made continue to echo through history. Today, we honor the courage of those who fought, the families who endured, and the lasting legacy of their service.

In 1917, the 151st Field Artillery was mobilized for World War I, joining the legendary Rainbow Division—a unit composed of National Guard soldiers from across the country. These 'Gopher Gunners' trained rigorously before deploying to France, where they fought in six grueling campaigns, including Champagne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and the decisive Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Their courage under fire and unwavering dedication helped shape the course of the war.
Returning home in 1919, they were met with a hero’s welcome, their legacy cemented in Minnesota’s military history. Today, we honor their service, sacrifice, and the enduring impact of their contributions.

Happy Women's Veterans Day to our brave female service members, who chose to defend our nation!

The two female Black Hawk crews stand after returning from their Christmas Day mission. Hawaii, Washington, and Minnesota are all represented in the 2nd Battalion, 147th Aviation Regiment, and Soldiers from all three states participated in the all-female mission.

Our collection has many pieces of equipment worn or used by Minnesotans, including a flight suit worn by MAJ Patricia Baker, a UH-60 Black Hawk pilot of the 34th Combat Aviation Brigade, 34th Infantry Division, while deployed to Iraq in 2008-09.

This small US 48 star flag, printed on gauze, was worn by veteran 82nd Airborne paratrooper Albert Larson from Minneapolis when he jumped into Normandy with "B" Co. 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment outside of the small town of Ste. Mere Eglise.
They were worn specifically by paratroopers to identify them as American forces because paratroopers would be dropped behind enemy lines and risked being mistaken for Axis soldiers by the main US assault forces approaching them over land.

Freedom comes at a cost, and today we remember those who gave everything to defend it. Their dedication, courage, and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Let us honor their memory by carrying forward the ideals they stood for.

As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, we pause to reflect on the selfless sacrifices of our armed forces—acts of courage that have secured our freedoms. May we honor their legacy with gratitude, remembrance, and a steadfast commitment to the values they defended.

History in Motion: Our Mission Hits the Road!
Thanks to a generous grant from the Veterans 4 Veterans Fund, we’re proud to unveil our newly wrapped outreach van — a bold, mobile tribute to Minnesota’s military history.
📍 This photo was taken in Duluth at the public premiere of PBS North’s United in Service, where the van made its debut to veterans, families, and community members.
More than just transportation, this van is a moving piece of our mission — helping us share stories, engage with communities, and build momentum as we work to create a world-class military museum from the ground up.
📸 If you spot us out and about, snap a photo, tag us, and help us share the journey.

Combat Vehicle Crewman (CVC)
Worn by a member of the 136th during the GWoT. This helmet, found in a pallet of helmets that were marked as property of the 136th and were being removed from service, is a veteran of combat operations in Iraq. A spray desert camouflage pattern has been applied to the shell, and a brown plastic MRE spoon has been affixed to the front of the microphone with zip ties. This simple field expedient modification allowed for better voice transmission in the noisy environment of the tank or armored fighting vehicle this soldier served in.

The M578 Light Armored Recovery Vehicle is one of the many large artifacts displayed at the Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum. The M578 is used as a recovery and repair vehicle by most service branches, including self-propelled artillery battalions, mechanized infantry battalions, and armored cavalry regiments. The M578 is also used to change major components in the field, such as engines, transmissions, and tank barrels.

“The vision is becoming real. The legacy is taking shape.”
– Jon Van Amber, Gallery & Brand Designer
Stepping inside the future Minnesota Military & Veterans Museum was nothing short of awe-inspiring.
Led by executive Director Randal Dietrich, our full team came together — from founding board members and museum staff to Camp Ripley representatives and our powerhouse gallery design team.
Using advanced design tools, we stood in the very spots where history will soon come to life — including the base where the massive Submarine Conning Tower will be mounted.
The gallery design team includes:
• Richard Rummel – Lighting legend
• William Maple – Gallery designer for U.S. Presidential libraries
• Jesse Heinzen – Global theater & AV storyteller
• David Geister – Acclaimed sculptor and scenic artist
• Jon Van Amber – Emmy-winning brand & gallery designer
This is more than a museum. It’s a mission to preserve and honor our stories like never before.

Today in 1861, Minnesota Gov. Alexander Ramsey was in President Lincoln's office when the call went out for federal troops for the Civil War. Minnesota was the first in the nation to offer a unit, hence the First Minnesota was named for that honor.

Preserving History, Honoring Heroes
At the Minnesota Military & Veterans Museum, every donated item tells a unique story—and we’re working hard to ensure that those stories are preserved for future generations.
Recently, we were honored to receive a remarkable donation from a Minnesota veteran: a photo album documenting life aboard a German Naval boat. This album provides an extraordinary glimpse into naval warfare and the complexities of history. As our dedicated team works to catalog this piece and many others, we’re reminded of the incredible trust our donors place in us to safeguard their memories.
While we prepare for the grand opening of our new facility in 2026, our current museum remains open, welcoming visitors who share our passion for honoring veterans and exploring the past.
Help us continue this vital work—visit us, support us, and follow our journey as we build an exciting future for this museum. Together, we preserve history. Together, we honor service.
